The Symmetric Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SSOFC) with identical electrode materials improves the resistance to coking and sulfur poisoning of the anode by periodic switching of the cathode and anode. The advantages and disadvantages of the available symmetrical electrodes are summed up by classifying and collating the symmetrical electrodes in recent years. A comprehensive analysis shows that it is necessary to discover single-phase stable oxide symmetrical electrodes applicable to electrolytes other than La_0.8Sr_0.2Ga_0.8Mg_0.2O_3-δ (LSGM) or to develop new symmetrical electrode materials.
