Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are a group of digestive disorders affecting nearly 40% of the global population. In recent years, studies have demonstrated the significant therapeutic effects of a wealth of herbal medicines and their bioactive components in the treatment of FGIDs. Notably, among these herbal preparations, food and medicine homology (FMH) plants account for a significant portion. This review focuses on the use of FMH plants and FMH-containing formulas for the treatment of FGIDs, provides an overview of their pharmacological effects, and analyzes the modeling and efficacy of those formulas, FMH extracts, and corresponding components in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. This review aims to serve as a reference for the research and application of FMH used to treat FGIDs.
