Let $τ (n)$ be the Dirichlet divisor function and $k ⩾ 2$ be a fixed integer. We give an asymptotic formula of the mean square of

$Δ_{k} (x) = \sum_{n_{1}, \dots, n_{k} ⩽ x} τ (n_{1} \dots n_{k}) - x^{k} P_{k} (\log x) .$
