Relationship between depth of the curve of Spee and dentalfacial morphology in Angle Class Ⅱ maloclusion patients

Objective

To compare the depth of the curve of Spee in Angle classⅡ malocclusion patients with different vertical skeletal patterns and to investigate the relationship between the depth of the curve of Spee and dentofacial morphology.

Methods

101 Angle classⅡ malocclusion patients were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups based on their GoGn-SN angles-high angle, average angle and low angle. Lateral cephalograms and dental models of all patients were evaluated to analyze Spee curve depth difference among different groups, Correlation analysis and a multiple linear regression analysis were performed to determine the relationship between the depth of the curve of Spee and all selected cephalometric variables.

Results

There was statistical difference in depth of the curve of Spee among different groups P<0.05. The depth of the curve of Spee was least in the high angle group and greatest in the low angle group. GoGn-SN angle had statistically significant negative correlation with the depth of the curve of Spee, r = 0.428, P = 0.000, ODI, S-Go/N-Me、L7-GoGn angle had statistically significant positive correlation with the depth of the curve of Spee, r = 0.381, 0.357, 0.333, P = 0.000, 0.000, 0.001. The multiple linear regression analysis with stepwise method showed GoGn-SN angle had significant contribution to the depth of the curve of Spee.

Conclusion

In Angle classⅡ malocclusion patients, there was statistical difference in depth of the curve of Spee among different vertical skeletal patterns. The depth of the curve of Spee is correlated with dentofacial morphology, GoGn-SN angle had significant contribution to the depth of the curve of Spee, which should be taken into consideration during orthodontic diagnosis and treatment.

Objective

To investigate the esthetic perceptions of female maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor gingival margin asymmetries for orthodontic patients.

Methods

Female maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor gingival margin asymmetries models were set up. The distance from the gingival margin of the center incisor and lateral incisor to the incisor edge was set as 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm. A questionnaire was designed to investigate the esthetic perceptions of gingival margin asymmetries.

Results

In general, the most attractive smiles for the orthodontic patients were the ones without asymmetries or with a 0.5-1.0 mm asymmetry (P<0.05). The patients could be initiated the difference by an asymmetry of 1.0 mm, and the asymmetries with 1.5-2.0 mm were not acceptable for anesthetics (P<0.05).

Conclusion

The perceptions of anesthetic asymmetries in the gingival margin levels of the female maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor gingival margin were 1.0-1.5 mm, and this statics is somewhat clinically instructive.

A comparative study between the immediate and early implant on the aesthetic influences of the peri-implant soft tissues in the aesthetic area

Objective

The aim was to compare and document the aesthetic influences on peri-implant soft tissues between the immediate and early implant placement in the aesthetic area.

Methods

22 patients with single anterior teeth missing were included and divided into 2 group. Group A (12cases): Following the extraction of teeth, 12 Zimmer implants were immediately placed into sockets. Group B (10 cases): 4~8 weeks after the extraction, 10 Zimmer implants were early placed into the healing sockets. Zirconia crowns were applied on the implants 6 months later after implantation. The peri-implant soft tissues in both group were examined and evaluated by pink esthetic score (PES) 6~12 months later. Analysis of the data was performed by software SPSS 13.0.

Results

The mean PES was 9.27 (clinical acceptance) for all of the implants. No significant were found for any of the parameters between the treatment modalities regardness of total PES or single PES. However there were significant differences in the following aspects: the correlation between periodontal disease and papilla, the correlation between gingival biotype and mesial papilla, the correlation between gingival biotype and alveolar process deficiency, the correlation between Implant location and midfacial soft tissue level.

Conclusion

There are no significant differences between immediate placement and early placement on the aesthetic outcome of peri-implant soft tissues. The aesthetic outcome are related to patients oral health condition and clinicians skills.

Objective

Lip soft tissue were measured and assessed before and after orthodontic treatment of Class Ⅱ division 1 adults in order to instruct the clinical work.

Methods

A total of 30 post-treatment adult patients of Class Ⅱ division 1 were selected, whose post-treatment model and cephalometric data were within the normal range. The pre- and post-treatment front image and lateral cephalograms lip sagittal thickness and vertical thickness measurement.

Results

Post-treatment upper lip vertical become thinner and lower lip vertical thickness is bigger which has a statistically significant gap. Upper lip vermilion of the initial tissue thickness after treatment increased, lower lip vermilion of initial tissue thickness had a tendency to decrease after treatment, and there was statistical significance. The retraction of upper incisor cervical point (U1C) was positively correlated with upper lip retraction (TUL). The retraction of lower incisor cervical point (L1C) was positively correlated with lower lip retraction (TLL). And the retraction of upper incisor most anterior point was positively correlated with lower lip retraction.

Conclusion

Upper and lower lip retraction in Class Ⅱ division 1 Chinese adults could be effectively predicted by the retraction of incisors after extraction orthodontic treatment.
