Let $G$ be a graph that can be embedded in a surface $\mathrm{\Sigma }$ of Euler characteristic $c^{\prime }(\mathrm{\Sigma })$. In this paper, we proved that there exists an integer ${\mathrm{\Delta }}_0=4\cdot (5+\sqrt{49-24c^{\prime }})\cdot [2-c^{\prime }+\frac{1}{2}(5+\sqrt{49-24c^{\prime }})]$ such that the total chromatic number of $G$ is $\mathrm{\Delta }(G)+1$ if $\mathrm{\Delta }(G)\ge {\mathrm{\Delta }}_0$.
