Call for Papers: Special Issue on Applications and Implications of LLMs in the Human Society

Large Language Models (LLMs) and their ability to simulate a variety of human voices and perspectives have revolutionized the capacity of artificial intelligences, and raised enthusiasm and concern over their increasingly broad use in society. The Journal of Social Computing (jOsOcO) (hosted in IEEE Xplore) would like to invite papers for one or more special issues on the topic of LLMs, their potential for computational social science, and their implications for society. Relevant topics include:

  1. Implicit biases within LLMs based on their training data, architecture, and use (see John Levi Martin’s recent The Ethico-Political Universe of ChatGPT as an example.)
  2. Social and cultural implications from using LLMs for a widening variety of tasks and functions in society.
  3. The study of LLMs’ implications for mis- and dis-information across a range of knowledge settings, from politics and crime to medicine and finance.
  4. The use of LLMs to model culturally plausible agents, simulating individual positions, survey and interview responses (e.g., for difficult or impossible to approach populations).
  5. The use of LLMs to model socially plausible agents, simulating social interactions and engagements in agent-based modeling.
  6. The (re)design of LLMs for novel social scientific purposes including cultural, social, and technological prediction.
  7. Analyses that improve our understanding of, and ability to make credible social and cultural inferences from LLMs and associated research designs.

Perspectives, methodological investigations, and empirical pieces are all welcomed for consideration.

Submission Guidelines

Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library as open access. No page charges will be requested for publications. No page limitations are set for paper submissions and publications. Paper submission link: https://mc03.manuscriptcentral.com/jsc-tup. The manuscript type should be selected as “Special Issue on Applications and Implications of LLMs in the Human Society”.
