They are vital for preserving the integrity of the skin barrier and are involved in the regulation of the cell cycle and differentiation processes. Mitochondrial dysfunction can precipitate a range of skin conditions, including premature aging, psoriasis, vitiligo, and impaired wound healing.
• Dermatological treatments targeting mitochondria: Multiple strategies are being explored to harness mitochondrial function to manage skin diseases. These treatments include increasing mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate synthesis to increase metabolic activity and employing antioxidants to curb reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or to neutralize existing ROS, thereby safeguarding mitochondrial integrity.
• Future research on mitochondrial targeted therapy will focus on mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial autophagy, and the interaction between mitochondria and cell death pathways. The challenges to be addressed include how to precisely target mitochondria, how to evaluate the status of mitochondrial function, and how to balance treatment efficiency.
