Cities are regions characterized by intensive resource consumption and substantial solid waste generation. In response to the UN’s call to zero-waste initiatives, numerous countries worldwide have been investigating sustainable solid waste management pathways to enhance resource efficiency, foster green and low-carbon economic and social development, and contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality. By implementing the highest and best practices within the waste management hierarchy, cities can significantly reduce solid waste generation. A transition to sustainable production and consumption patterns is emphasized which aim to maintain the value of products, materials, and resources within the economy for as long as possible.
