1. Background
As the "Artificial Intelligence (AI) + Transportation" strategy continues to advance, transportation large language models (LLMs), cooperative perception, and resilience enhancement have emerged as key frontiers in intelligent transportation research. In the domain of large models, LLMs and generative AI have delivered breakthroughs in use cases including traffic forecasting and signal control. Yet challenges remain: limited interpretability, high computational costs, and inadequate integration of domain-specific transportation knowledge continue to hinder their real-world deployment in transportation engineering applications. In the field ofs collaborative perception, vehicle-road-cloud integration has significantly expanded the capabilities of single-vehicle perception systems. However, gaps remain in three key areas: spatiotemporal alignment accuracy for multi-source data, real-time communication reliability, and robust security verification frameworks. For resilience applications, intelligent perception and dynamic decision-making tools have markedly improved post-disaster recovery efficiency. But the absence of standardized resilience evaluation metrics, limitations in multi-hazard coupling modeling, and insufficient systematic validation of AI enablement pathways highlight an urgent need for foundational theoretical advances and methodological innovations.
Against this backdrop, the journals’ editorial offices are jointly launching the special column "AI-Empowered Road Transportation Systems". This initiative aims to advance cutting-edge research at the intersection of transportation frontiers, solve real-world engineering challenges, address critical technical limitations, and accelerate the practical translation and innovative application of state-of-the-art AI technologies in typical road transportation use cases.
The special column will be published across two journals: the Chinese journal Gonglu Jiaotong Keji (GLJTKJ, ISSN 1002-0268) and the English journal Journal of Highway and Transportation Research and Development (English Edition) (HTRD, ISSN 2095-6215), with Chinese manuscripts submitted to GLJTKJ and English manuscripts to HTRD.
We warmly invite high-quality, original academic submissions from the global transportation research community.
2. Scope
This special column welcomes original research papers integrating theory and application, as well as high-quality review papers. Topics include, but are not limited to:
3. Submission Requirements
(1) Manuscript requirements. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and not under simultaneous consideration elsewhere. The similarity rate must be no more than 10% (with appropriate flexibility for review papers). Manuscripts should demonstrate innovation, scientific value, and practical significance; employ rigorous research methods; and use authentic, traceable data. All required manuscript elements and information must be complete, and funding projects should be clearly acknowledged. Authors are requested to strictly follow the relevant journal submission template to ensure consistent and standardized formatting.
(2) Submission method. Manuscripts must be submitted through the journals' online submission and peer-review systems. Authors may choose either journal's official submission platform and should indicate "Special column on AI-Empowered Road Transportation Systems" in the submission notes so that the editorial office can classify and process the manuscript promptly and accurately.
(3) Review process. All submissions will first undergo preliminary review organized by the editorial office. Manuscripts passing the initial review will be sent to external peer experts for review, followed by final review by the Editor-in-Chief. Only manuscripts that successfully complete the review process will be accepted for publication.

4. Submission Deadline and Publication Schedule
Submission deadline: December 2026
Expected publication: May 2027. Once a manuscript is accepted, it may be published online as a Just Accepted article.
5. Special Column Advisors
Professor Jian Sun currently serves as Director of the Department of Traffic Engineering at Tongji University, Distinguished Professor with tenure, and doctoral supervisor. He was graduated from the College of Transportation, Tongji University in 2006 and joined the faculty the same year. In 2011, he was exceptionally promoted from lecturer to full professor. His research interests include traffic flow theory and simulation, intelligent transportation, automated driving, and cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems. In recent years, he has led two projects/sub‑projects under the National Key R&D Program of China, seven projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and over 50 other research projects. He has published more than 200 academic papers, of which over 150 are indexed in SCI and more than 50 in EI. He has also authored four monographs, contributed to three provincial/ministerial standards, and been granted 50 invention patents. His research achievements have earned him three first‑class provincial/ministerial science and technology awards and six international academic honors. He serves as Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member for six domestic and international journals, including IET Intelligent Transportation Systems, Journal of Intelligent and Connected Vehicles, China Journal of Highway and Transport, and Journal of Tongji University. He is also Vice Chair of the Traffic Modeling and Simulation Committee under the China Simulation Federation. He has been selected for the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund, the Young Changjiang Scholar program of the Ministry of Education, and the NSFC National Outstanding Youth Science Fund.

| Professor Chuan Ding is a doctoral supervisor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is a recipient of the National Youth Talent program and currently serves as Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Transportation Technology and Systems, Ministry of Education. His research focuses on modeling and control of road transportation systems, intelligent cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems, and traffic simulation. He has been selected for multiple talent programs, including the Ministry of Education Young Scholar and the Young Top‑notch Talent in Transportation, and has been named among the World's Top 2% Scientists. He has published over 50 SCI/SSCI papers as first or corresponding author, and has authored four monographs in Chinese and English. He has led several major research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation. His work has earned him multiple provincial/ministerial awards, including the First Prize of the Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award and the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award. He also serves as an Editorial Board Member for internationally renowned SCI journals such as Transportation Research Part D and IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, and is a Council Member of several national transportation societies in China. | Professor Kai Lu is a doctoral supervisor at South China University of Technology. He currently serves as Associate Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation, Director of the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Intelligent Transportation Information and Control, and Director of the Guangdong Higher Education Institutions Engineering Technology Research Center for Modern Transportation. He also holds positions as Council Member of the China Intelligent Transportation Systems Association and Vice Chairman of the Low‑altitude Economy and Technology Education Branch of the China Transportation Education Research Association. He has received honorary titles including Outstanding Young Teacher of Guangdong Higher Education Institutions, Pearl River Science and Technology New Star of Guangzhou, and Outstanding Young Innovative Talent of Guangdong Higher Education Institutions. His research focuses on road traffic control. He has led three projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He received one Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award as the first recipient, and as a major contributor, he also received one First Prize (ranked 4th) and one Second Prize (ranked 2nd) of the same award. He has published over 60 papers indexed in SCI/EI, been granted more than 30 national invention patents and 2 US invention patents, and authored one academic monograph. He has guided graduate students to win one gold medal and two first prizes in national science and innovation competitions. | Professor Zhihong Li is a doctoral supervisor at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and serves as Associate Dean of the school. He has received the Science and Technology Innovation Youth Award from the China Communications and Transportation Association, and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Washington, Purdue University, and Beihang University. His research focuses on large passenger flow management, freight optimization, and autonomous driving. He has led over 20 provincial/ministerial research projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund, sub-projects of the National Key R&D Program, and the Beijing Key Fund. He has published more than 50 academic papers in authoritative journals, been granted over 10 invention patents, and successfully commercialized some of them. He has received more than 10 awards, including honors at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions and multiple provincial/ministerial science and education awards. He has also authored one Beijing-level high-quality undergraduate textbook. | Professor Feng Sun is a doctoral supervisor at Shandong University of Technology. He currently serves as Associate Dean of the School of Transportation and Vehicle Engineering and Deputy Director of the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Smart City Cloud Brain Technology. He also holds positions as a member of the Traffic Management and Control Committee of the World Transport Convention and a member of the University Faculty Committee of the China Highway and Transportation Society. His research focuses on intelligent traffic signal control technology and traffic big data mining theories and methods. He has undertaken seven projects under the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and provincial key R&D programs, as well as over 30 government consulting and corporate R&D projects. He has published more than 50 academic papers, been granted over 30 invention patents, and authored two books. | Dr. Ying Jiang is an associate professor at the School of Transportation, Southeast University. She received her Ph.D. in Development Science (Transportation Engineering) from Hiroshima University in Japan. She previously served as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Washington in the United States and as an Assistant Professor at Hiroshima University in Japan. Her research focuses on transportation-energy integration at comprehensive transport hubs, port big data and multi-source data fusion, and travel behavior decision-making. She integrates econometrics, big data, and AI methodologies to expand the interdisciplinary theoretical framework. She has published over 30 papers in high-level journals and contributed to five monographs. She has led or participated in more than 20 vertical research projects and over 30 industry-funded projects across China, the United States, and Japan. | Professor Xinqiang Chen is a doctoral supervisor at Shanghai Maritime University. He has been named among the World's Top 2% Scientists. His research focuses on traffic big data mining, visual perception for intelligent ship navigation, and automated terminal navigation. He has led over 20 vertical and industry-funded research projects, including those under the National Natural Science Foundation of China General Program and Young Scientists Fund. He has published more than 50 SCI papers as first or corresponding author, of which 22 are ESI Highly Cited Papers. As the first inventor, he has filed or been granted over 20 invention patents in China and abroad. As the first recipient, he has received the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award from the China Institute of Navigation and the Youth Science and Technology Award from the China Ports Association. | Professor Nengchao Lü is a doctoral supervisor at Wuhan University of Technology. He currently serves as Director of the Institute of Traffic Information and Intelligent Systems. He has been selected for the Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of Hubei Province and recognized as a Young Science and Technology Talent of Transportation by the Ministry of Transport. His research focuses on road traffic safety and intelligent transportation systems. He has led nearly 20 national and provincial/ministerial research projects and over 30 industry-funded projects. He has published more than 150 papers, of which over 100 are indexed in SCI/EI, and has been granted more than 20 invention patents and software copyrights. | Professor Jinjun Tang is a doctoral supervisor at the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Central South University, and serves as Director of the Research Center for Intelligent Electric Vehicles. He has been selected as an Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher, named among the World's Top 2% Scientists, and recognized as a Furong Scholar Young Scholar of Hunan Province. He received his joint Ph.D. from Harbin Institute of Technology and the University of Washington. His research focuses on traffic information engineering and control. He has published over 90 SCI/SSCI papers, including 14 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 4 ESI Hot Papers. His publications have received more than 7,940 citations on Google Scholar, with an H‑index of 49. He has led more than 20 research projects, including sub‑projects of the National Key R&D Program and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has been granted over 30 invention patents, with technology transfer valued at 4.5 million RMB. | Professor Guangnian Xiao is a doctoral supervisor at Shanghai Maritime University, and currently serves as Associate Dean of the School of Economics and Management. He is a Council Member of the Maritime Systems Branch of the Systems Engineering Society of China. His research focuses on intelligent transportation systems, green shipping management and policy, and traffic big data analytics. He has led multiple national-level research projects, including General Program and Young Scientists Fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as talent programs such as the Shanghai Shuguang Program and the Shanghai Oriental Talents Young Program.
