In the contemporary milieu, conventional "medicinal supplements" are increasingly perceived as an unhealthy approach. Instead, the embrace of "food & medicine homologous substances" by the masses is gaining traction.
A growing body of evidence underscores the crucial role of specific nutrients and compounds derived from food & medicine homologous sources in maintaining the health and optimal functionality of the nervous system. These homologous substances, rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, are widely recognized for their potential to preserve the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, mitigate neuroinflammation, and promote hippocampal neurogenesis, thereby contributing to overall brain health.
This Research Topic aims to investigate the potential health benefits of food & medicine homologous substances in the management of neurological disorders, including headache, depression, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, with a particular focus on their effects on disease-associated neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, impaired neurogenesis, and cognitive deficits such as memory impairment. This special issue endeavors to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by advocating for the balanced intake of food & medicine homologous substances to reduce the risk of neurological disorders and enhance neurological well-being.

- Clinical evaluation of the effects of food & medicine homologous substances on brain health
- Artificial intelligence-based mining of active ingredients from food & medicine homologous substances and mechanistic insights into their brain health-promoting effects
- Functions and mechanisms of bioactive molecules derived from food & medicine homologous substances—including polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, and dietary fiber—in modulating multi-target pathways to maintain brain health
- The role of oxidative stress in neurological disorders and the protective effects of antioxidants from food & medicine homologous substances
- Protective mechanisms of food & medicine homologous substances and their bioactive compounds against neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, and impaired neurogenesis
