CFP–Special Issue on Frontier and Progress in Operating Systems

With the rapid development in computer science and the emergence of new technologies, operating systems have gradually become crucial support for new applications and computing environments. The advent of emerging technologies such as heterogeneous computing, artificial intelligence, and serverless computing has brought forth new requirements for operating systems, necessitating novel architectural designs, and resource abstractions to efficiently support the operation of these emerging technologies. Furthermore, advancements in hardware, such as integrating accelerators and heterogeneous memory devices, have introduced new underlying demands for operating systems. These novel hardware technologies require the development of operating systems to integrate seamlessly into existing systems, optimizing system performance, and resource utilization. Overall, there is a growing demand for operating systems to embrace new hardware innovations while catering to the requirements of emerging technologies. Operating systems are gradually becoming the primary determinant of computing system performance. Consequently, operating systems have become a hot research topic in academia in recent years. Additionally, major global enterprises such as Huawei, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and OPPO have also launched their layout on this aspect to accelerate the optimization of existing technologies and the application of emerging technologies more efficiently.

The focus of this special issue is to publish new research outcomes that are advancing the current level of research or contributing to a comprehensive understanding of challenges within the domain of operating systems. These challenges encompass various aspects of computing system architectures, such as file and storage systems, distributed systems, cloud computing systems, and foundational research on virtualization, system security, privacy, formal verification, testing tools, and architectures. The topics include, but are not limited to

  • Operating systems
  • File and storage systems
