CFP: Special Issue on BCI Competition and Selected Algorithms

The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the term brain–computer interface (BCI), which was proposed by Jacques Vidal in 1973 in his pioneering publication. The inception of BCI technology opens a new avenue for the brain to interface and interact with the outside world, and there has been a wide spectrum of BCI paradigms and applications emerging in the past half-century. As a cornerstone for various paradigms and applications, BCI decoding is an important and active area of research. BCI competitions, e.g., BCI Controlled Robot Contest in World Robot Contest, offer an opportunity for researchers to design novel decoding algorithms that further move forward the BCI performance and efficacy in real-world applications. The selected algorithms that stood out in the BCI competition hold great promise to improve the quality of life for patients in assistive and augmentative communication. For this reason, as the year of BCI’s 50th anniversary is ushered in, this special issue will bring together a collection of methodological and technical advancements pertinent to practical BCI systems.

Specifically, this issue on Brain Science Advances will focus on BCI algorithm and the following four types of articles are encouraged.

  • Methodology article that proposes a novel BCI algorithm and extensively validates the proposed method.
  • Review article that comprehensively surveys and analyzes the BCI algorithms for a specific BCI paradigm.
  • Technical report that presents an in-depth coverage on a novel and impactful BCI event (e.g., competition, exhibition).
  • Database article that curates, validates and provides an open-access dataset for the BCI community.
