To clarify the role of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) gene family in the development and reproduction of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.
Through BLAST analyses against Caenorhabditis elegans and other nematodes, we identified 12 ADH genes in the B. xylophilus genome. These genes were retrieved and analyzed for physicochemical properties, chromosomal location, protein structures and stage-specific expression. Predicted isoelectric points ranged from 5.86 to 9.12.
Transcript levels were high in eggs, males, third- and fourth-stage larvae, diapause L3 and dispersal L4, indicating that the family is required for egg development, growth and sexual differentiation.
These data define candidate targets for gene-based control of B. xylophilus.
