Abstract

With the rapid development of the social economy, the importance of basic research is becoming increasingly prominent. The “strengthening basic disciplines plan” as an important development strategy of higher education in China aims to cultivate high-level talents with innovative spirit, practical ability, and social responsibility. The reform of professional course teaching, as a key link to promote the cultivation of talents in the Strong Foundation Plan, urgently needs deep thought and practical exploration. “Global Design of Metallic Materials”, as a professional core course for the talent cultivation of the physics-based Strong Foundation Plan at Northwestern Polytechnical University, is established based on the construction idea of interdisciplinary integration combined with the university's advantages in the field of materials science research. The core knowledge content includes solid structure and defects, phase transformation thermodynamics and kinetics, as well as the mechanical properties and electrical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics of metals. It guides students to apply systematic and profound physics knowledge in the design and preparation of new metal materials through diversified practical teaching content. This is the core foundation for carrying out interdisciplinary research between physics and materials science and plays an important role in the cultivation of top-notch innovative “material people” in the new era. How to deeply instill students' national sentiment in course teaching, strengthen basic theoretical knowledge, enhance innovative thinking ability, and achieve the goal of scientific research feeding back into teaching are the reform objectives we focus on and strive to achieve.
