Abstract

Homeostasis is fundamental to sustaining health and longevity in organisms; however, the mechanisms governing its regulation and enhancement remain largely obscure. Hormesis, a phenomenon characterized by a biphasic dose-response, has emerged as a potential modulator of homeostatic processes. This adaptive response is defined by beneficial effects at low exposures while exerting inhibitory or deleterious effects at higher doses. Although initially controversial, the concept of hormesis has gained growing recognition within the scientific community. A diverse array of stressors can elicit hormetic responses, with low-dose exposure potentially promoting health and longevity. However, the adaptive effects of hormesis are highly context-dependent, varying across individuals and physiological states. This review explores the impact of various hormetic stimuli on aging, aiming to elucidate their potential role in promoting healthy aging in humans.
