China’s Relations with Latin America and the Caribbean: The Impact of the Belt and Road Initiative in the Last Decade

China’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) mark a new stage, with the Chinese government having as its central axis the launching of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013 and the installation of the Chinese Dream upon seeking for a geopolitical space in LAC. This position focused on a South-South cooperation implies, on the one hand, occupying spaces which had historically been under the influence of the United States and, on the other hand, finding actors in the Caribbean which would allow the strengthening of the BRI. In this perspective, the hypothesis ponders on the Chinese long-term strategy which seeks allies that allow it to strengthen diplomatic relationships, secure business agreements, and create of new cooperation spaces in which the competition between the United States and China is made evident.
