Highlights
• This study pioneers the use of a composite Carbohydrate Quality Index (CQI), integrating dietary fiber intake, glycemic index, whole grain ratio, and solid carbohydrate ratio, to comprehensively evaluate the association between carbohydrate quality and sleep health.
• Higher CQI (indicating better carbohydrate quality) was significantly associated with improved sleep quality (OR: 0.64 for highest vs. lowest quintile), while no link was found between total carbohydrate intake and sleep outcomes, emphasizing the critical role of carbohydrate quality over quantity.
• Focusing on middle-aged and older Chinese adults, the study provides actionable dietary strategies for improving sleep health in this demographic, bridging gaps in real-world, population-specific sleep and nutrition research.
