Abstract

Additive manufacturing of advanced ceramic materials by using fused deposition modelling possesses various advantages, such as high efficiency, low cost and wide powder adaptability. The application and limitations of additive manufacturing technologies for advanced ceramic materials were comprehensively analyzed, while the technical principles and characteristics of fused deposition based on wires and screw extrusion were discussed. The research progress of fused deposition modelling techniques in the fields of structural ceramics, functional ceramics, bioceramics and ceramic matrix composites were reviewed. The development trends and research focus of fused deposition modelling technology are prospected from three aspects: robotic arm-assisted 3D printing, printing process monitoring and defect controlling and computer simulation of the additive manufacturing process.
