Abstract

Objective

To evaluate the clinical effect of the surgical extraction of traumatized permanent teeth with complicated crown-root fractures.

Methods

Among the dental trauma patients diagnosed in the Emergency Department of Beijing Stomatological Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2011 to January 2016, a total of 17 permanent teeth with complicated crown-root fractures were included in this retrospective study. According to the International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines, the roots were surgically extruded to a more coronal position and stabilized with splints to reconstruct the biologic width. The follow-up period was 6 months to 7 years.

Results

All 17 teeth with complicated crown-root fractures survived during follow-up. The most common complications were surface resorption (5 teeth), marginal bone loss (2 teeth) and tooth mobility (1 tooth). No periapical lesion or root resorption was found in surgically extruded teeth.

Conclusion

Surgical extraction is a safe and rapid treatment option in the management of complicated crown-root fractures in permanent anterior teeth.
