Abstract

To accurately measure natural wind speed and direction, this paper proposes a wind measurement method based on the principle of wind pressure difference. According to the surface pressure distribution characteristics of subcritical flow around a cylinder, a circumferential array consisting of six cylindrical tubes was designed. The dynamic pressures at the tube orifices were measured using six high-precision differential pressure sensors. Wind speed and direction were then calculated using the maximum value and the maximum value of its adjacent tube. In addition, the proposed system was experimentally compared with a cup anemometer and an ultrasonic anemometer in natural environment. The results show that the proposed anemometer exhibits fast response, high accuracy, a wide measurement range, intelligent operation, and long-term working capability, making it suitable for strong wind speed and direction measurements in field test environments.
