Highlights
• Intercellular mitochondrial transfer relies on multiple biological pathways, and its initiation and efficiency are modulated by diverse trigger factors and regulatory molecules.
• Mitochondrial transfer facilitates wound repair via multiple mechanisms, including alleviating oxidative stress, attenuating inflammation, restoring energy metabolism, delaying cellular senescence, promoting angiogenesis, and regulating collagen remodeling.
• Derived from mitochondrial transfer, diverse mitochondrial transplantation strategies offer new options for wound therapy; yet, several obstacles remain before clinical translation.
