Highlights
• Faecal sludge (FS) grit production is 6.2 m3/1000 m3 FS (wet); while wastewater (WW) grit is 0.077 m3/1000 m3 WW.
• FS grit had high nutrient content: OC (30.3%), TN (2.9%), CEC (90.6 meq/100g) suitable for soil conditioning.
• WW grit contained >98% sand-sized particles suitable for sand substitution in construction.
• Both WW and FS grit had suitable C/N ratios (10.5–19.5) for use as compost bulking agents.
• Elevated E. coli (>105 CFU/100 mL) require grit pre-treatment before use.
