In this work, we experimentally investigate this phenomenon and establish a corresponding dynamical model. The Slinky is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli helical beam. In the zeroth-order approximation, a basic equation describing its periodic overall rotation is obtained. By retaining first-order perturbations, a dispersion relation for transverse bending waves is further derived, which explains the origin of the observed wave-like patterns. Experiments were carried out using Slinkies of different sizes, and the overall rotation period, steady-state angular velocity, transverse wave speed, and distance between adjacent wave crests were measured. The results show that the overall rotation period is linearly related to a combination of geometric parameters, the steady-state angular velocity is proportional to the initial number of twists, the transverse wave speed is independent of the initial twist, and the distance between adjacent wave crests is inversely proportional to the initial number of twists. The good agreement between theory and experiment verifies the validity of the model and provides a consistent physical explanation for this interesting phenomenon.
