In the global context, urban planning is undergoing a series of unprecedented transformations. These are reflected in several key aspects: the ongoing transition of global urbanization processes and planning paradigms; the reconstruction of planning and design methodologies driven by digital technologies; the reshaping of planning governance through multi-stakeholder participation; the evolution of planning decisions under the influence of climate change; the emergence of innovative planning theories fostered by interdisciplinary integration. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of China City Planning Review (CCPR), the CCPR Editorial Department, in collaboration with Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning & Design Institute Co., Ltd., successfully held an academic symposium titled “Urban Planning: A Global Perspective” on the afternoon of Aug. 31 during the Annual National Planning Conference 2025. The symposium facilitated cross-cultural dialogues on planning in response to contemporary global trends, highlighting the shift in urban planning from “problem-solving” to “change-making,” and from “going global and bringing in” to “interactive exchange and mutual advancement.”
