Highlights
• The milk proportions of 4:0, 8:0, 10:0, 13:0, 16:0, total odd-chain fatty acid (FA), and de novo FA increased in cows fed sodium propionate (NaPr).
• Supplementing the diet with NaPr significantly increased the concentrations of triglycerides (TG), glucose, and insulin in the plasma of postpartum dairy cattle.
• Supplementing the diet with NaPr alleviates negative energy balance (NEB) in postpartum dairy cattle by increasing plasma glucose levels and promoting lipid deposition in adipose tissue.
